Title: PROBABILISTIC ANALYSIS OF PIERS IN EXPANSIVE SOILS

Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The design of drilled piers in expansive soils requires a considerable amount of site-specific data. The cost associated with acquiring these data is seldom justifiable by the cost of the foundation. In general, some of the design parameters can be reasonably estimated for each site; however, other design parameters are effectively unavailable in routine design. A probabilistic analysis is proposed to incorporate some site-specific information to other design parameters selected from data bases. The proposed methodology is flexible enough to allow different design parameters to be incorporated as site-specific information. In this manner, a preliminary design can be accomplished without incorporating any site-specific information. The data bases assembled from existing data in the technical literature are described, as well as the analysis of these data to select probability density distributions for the different design parameters. A proposed analysis methodology is also described, and example runs for a hypothetical case are illustrated.
