Digital Copy: Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent agency charged with determining the facts, circumstances, and probable causes of transportation accidents and with promoting transportation safety. The NTSB was created by the U.S. Department of Transportation Act of 1966. It is best known for its investigation of catastrophic accidents. The NTSB conducts safety studies on topics of national significance. This article provides brief descriptions of the following five safety studies now in progress: 1) Alcohol and other drugs in aviation accidents; 2) Flight crew involvement in Part 121 air carrier accidents; 3) Fatigue in commercial transportation accidents; 4) Recreational boating safety; and 5) Locomotive fuel tank integrity.
