This summary of a presentation made at the 70th Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington, D.C., in January 1991, describes the development of a research protocol for the study of alcohol and drug involvement in traffic crashes. The results of a pilot implementation of the protocol are reported and guidelines are provided for project implementation at other sites.
