WHAT THE 1990 CENSUS WILL TELL US ABOUT COMMUTING IN AMERICA. FOURTH NATIONAL HIGH-OCCUPANCY VEHICLE (HOV) FACILITIES CONFERENCE, CONFERENCE PROCEEDINGS, WASHINGTON, D.C., APRIL 10-12, 1990
This conference presentation discusses what the 1990 census will tell us about commuting in America and, in particular, what the impact of these commuting patterns will mean for high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) facilities. Some of the trends identified are: a 27% to 29% increase in the number of commuters; a 42% increase in the use of automobiles as the primary commute mode; and a 50% increase in single occupant vehicle use for commuting. While these trends will have a negative impact on the use of HOV facilities, it is suggested that there are ways of dealing with these trends, provided the public decision making process and public support are forthcoming.
