Abstract:

This chapter, Chapter 4 of the "Guide to Earthwork Construction," is intended to acquaint field engineers and inspectors with good earthwork construction procedures and the reasons for developing them. Topics covered include preliminary work, clearing and grubbing, slope ditches, excavation, rock excavation, embankment foundations, embankments, compaction, cold weather construction, compaction equipment, compaction in confined areas, inspection, structure backfill, proof rolling, transitions, benching, and slope protection.
