The role of transportation in the nation's economy is discussed, and it is pointed out that one of the keys to being competitive in a global economy lies in the ability to provide safe, efficient, and low-cost transportation for goods and services. The future of the transportation industry is seen to clearly rest with the application of science and technology. Three major thrusts necessary for developing a national strategy for harnessing science and technology for economic growth and ensuring the competitiveness of not just the transportation industry, but all U.S. industry, are presented. They are (1) a regaining of lost competitiveness, (2) a drive to capitalize on technology with the objective of ensuring the creation of new technology and fostering the transfer from scientific discovery to commercialization, and (3) a strengthening of our educational systems across the board, from kindergarten to the 12th grade and at the university level.
