Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Described are the results of transit operator surveys that investigated operator perceptions of job conditions and potential enhancements to recognition programs. The surveys were carried out by the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni) as part of a demonstration project to improve transit service reliability and performance, funded by the Service and Methods Demonstration Program of UMTA, U.S. Department of Transportation. The project, which is currently still in progress, addresses recognition programs, attendance management, street supervision, rulebook revisions, and performance monitoring. A follow-up survey will be carried out as part of the project evaluation. The results of the initial survey have indicated that lack of recognition of good operators, poor public image of the transit system, and lack of responsiveness to operator suggestions are key sources of job dissatisfaction among operators. Operators favored several changes in the current Operator of the Month program, including increasing the number of operators recognized each month, rewarding more than one level of achievement, basing awards on the operator's overall record, and involving operators in the selection process. Type of award was not among the most important changes operators wished to see in the program.
