Abstract:

The Corwith railroad terminal was established in 1888 as the eastern terminus for Santa Fe freight trains. The location of the yard at right angles to the main line was unique. The shape, short and broad, was sufficient for the trains of 100 years ago but hardly adequate for mid-twentieth century trains. The terminal was modified slightly during the ensuing years, but it took the tremendous increase in business during World War II and the beginning of the diesel era to bring about the complete restructuring of the yard facilities. That constantly changing transportation requirements could be fitted into this mediocre yard site is impressive. With the advent of piggybacking, it was necessary to purchase additional land for intermodal facilities. It is enlightening to briefly touch on the history of a yard site that was selected in the wild railroad expansions of the 1880s, has served continuously since then, and has developed into the largest intermodal terminal in the United States.
