Abstract:

A case study is presented of a well-documented slope failure within the Durham Triassic Basin of North Carolina that indicates the appropriateness of using noncircular failure geometrics and suggests the applicability of utilizing postpeak strengths obtained from drained direct shear tests. A companion paper in this Record presents an experimental investigation of the drained shear strength of soils from three sites within this basin.
