Abstract:

The US-75 North Central Expressway Corridor research project in Dallas, Texas is briefly described, and it is shown how research results can provide many more benefits than originally expected. The project which consisted of approximately 30 square miles of freeway and city streets, was the first to study an integrated freeway corridor system. The cost of the project was approximately $11,000,000. The study resulted in a total corridor delay decrease of 7,440,000 vehicle minutes per year, and accidents were reduced by 47% during ramp meter control. Other benefits in the area of changeable message signs, frontage road travel improvement, and increased bus trips are noted. Besides these immediate results, implementation in other areas provided further benefits. One of the results was the development of the PASSER II, PASSER III, and PASSER IV computer models which have been included in the Federal Highway Administration's Arterial Analysis Package (AAP) because of their practical applications. Guidelines for interconnecting traffic signals along arterial streets are also being developed. Further implementation and research efforts are described. These include the following: change in left-turn phase sequence; phase sequence change at signalized freeway interchanges; demonstration for development of advanced traffic signal controllers; application of PASSER II and PASSER III in traffic signal systems; and freeway corridor surveillance and control. Future applications of the results of the US-75 corridor research project are also noted.
