Abstract:

Design storm patterns for use in predicting floods by simulating precipitation events in ungauged drainage basins in Wyoming are presented. The design patterns were developed from observed rainfall and are separated into two categories: thunderstorms (events less than 4 hr in duration) and general storms (events lasting 4 or more hr). Comparisons of predicted runoff using the new design storms and design storms recommended by the Soil Conservation Service (SCS) and the Bureau of Reclamation (BUREC) were made using the following models on a 0.83-mile2 watershed: (a) HEC-1 (the Hydrologic Engineering Center); (b) HYMO (Problem-Oriented Computer Language for Hydrologic Modeling); (c) HYDRO (the SCS Triangular Hydrograph); and (d) the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) distributed-routing digital rainfall-runoff models. The new design storms typically produce greater runoff peaks when simulating thunderstorm events, and, in most cases, smaller peaks when simulating runoff from general storms, than those predicted with the established procedures. Instructions describing the use and limitations of the new storm pattern construction method are included.
