Abstract:

Fabrication and erection tolerances facilitate the safe and cost-effective construction of steel bridges. Tolerances enable fabricators to work to levels of accuracy that are reasonable and to avoid more time and cost than needed to ensure that parts fit when erected in the field. The objective of this synthesis is to document department of transportation (DOT) practices related to the use of tolerances for steel bridge fabrication and construction. Information for this study was gathered through a literature review, a survey of state DOTs, and follow-up interviews with selected DOTs. Case examples of four state DOTs provide additional information on fabrication and erection tolerances for steel bridges.
