Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Only 19 percent of the U.S. population live in rural areas. Yet rural areas comprise a disproportionate share of U.S. roadway fatalities. Fixed, pole-mounted lighting at rural intersections helps to mitigate the problem. National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Synthesis 575 focuses on the necessity, design, and effectiveness of rural intersection lighting. State departments of transportation (DOTs) across the country were interviewed, research studies and standards reviewed, and case examples of isolated rural intersection lighting and alternatives documented. The resulting synthesis provides a current state of practice for lighting at these locations. Lessons learned are summarized in this article.
