Abstract:

TRIS (Transportation Research Information Service), the Transportation Research Board's computer-based information storage and retrieval system which connects users with the most complete transportation research data-base available, contains more than 185,000 abstracts of published works and summaries of research projects in progress. The abstracts come from 2,500 periodicals in 72 countries. Examples of the use of the system by transportation professionals are described. The principal subfiles of TRIS and HRIS (Highway Research Information Service), UMTRIS (Urban Mass Transportation Research Information Service), and HSL (Highway Safety Literature). Each of the various transportation modes is represented in TRIS: highways (49%); rail (12%), public transit (6%), aviation (2%), water (14%), and safety (17%). TRIS is an invaluable tool to gather information from foreign countries on topics still controversial in the U.S. as well as up-to-date data. The article describes how potential users may tap this service: through on-line access to the data base (DIALOG Fill 63), or batch-mode searches. The costs of using the service are also noted.
