Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: Safety on the highways is a function of many variables, include the condition of drivers, vehicles, weather, and the highway. The first two conditions are not in the province of this report, which is limited to a discussion of discontinuities in roadway surfaces under varying environmental conditions and their effect on highway safety. Examples of discontinuities are holes, ice, edge drops, curbs, and changes in surface friction. These conditions are frequently unexpected by vehicle operators. The purpose of this report is to present what has been learned about discontinuities in roadway surfaces. The objective is to provide information that may prove useful to highway engineers and administrators when decisions on maintenance expenditures are required. (Author)
