Abstract:

The objective of this research is to provide guidance that can be used by highway agencies to better understand the expected safety implications of increasing speed limits to 75 mph or greater. To accomplish this, the project also included the development of a standalone guide that will help individual state department of transportation decision-makers and policy developers integrate the findings into their respective speed management and safety programs. The guide is published as NCHRP Research Report 1006: Guide to Understanding Effects of Raising Speed Limits. This information will further help practitioners determine where, when, and to what level the raised speed limits will influence the number and type of crashes along the candidate corridor. This report documents data analyses efforts designed to assess the safety impacts of raised speed limits of 75 mph or higher.
