Title: Contribution of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement Binder to Microsurfacing Slurry
Accession Number: 01698455
Record Type: Component
Abstract: When reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) is combined with microsurfacing slurry (MS), RAP forms a “black rock.” The black rock is generated because when RAP is combined with MS, insufficient energy is present to appropriately melt the RAP binder. However, during the service period of the MS, when its temperature increases or diffusion occurs, the performance of the RAP in the MS is affected. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the contribution of RAP binder when mixed with MS. In the first stage, RAP contents of 20%, 50%, 80%, and 100% were mixed with MS and three levels of RAP binder contributions were used to investigate the contribution of RAP binder to MS. In the second stage, a pseudo RAP specimen was simulated to estimate the RAP binder performance when RAP is not mixed with MS. This simulated specimen was compared with a specimen in which RAP was mixed with MS. A performance test of MS was conducted as specified in the ISSA A143-2004 (2010) standard (Recommended Performance Guidelines for MS), and the modified Leutner test was conducted to evaluate the properties of MS mixtures. The results of the loaded wheel test, wet track abrasion test, and sand adhesion test indicated that the RAP binder contributes to the performance of MS. An analysis of the pseudo RAP specimen suggested that RAP binder contributed 0%–10% of the performance of MS. The results of the performance tests indicated that 100% RAP can be added to the MS mixture.
