Record URL: Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The objective of this synthesis is to better understand what data state departments of transportation (DOTs) and metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) are using and how they are measuring transportation performance as part of anticipated changes to the Federal program or current performance-based programs an agency may have implemented. This information can help national, state, and local organizations to learn about effective practices and to identify needs for future research, development, and deployment. The information contained in this synthesis was obtained using three sources. First, a literature review was conducted. Second, a survey was distributed to State DOTs and a sample of MPOs and university transportation centers. Finally, four case examples of State DOTs and MPOs were developed. In general, most states have the data they need and are prepared to process it to support performance reporting. Of the State DOTs responding, all have the data for bridge condition measures. Some DOTs cannot meet all the needs related to pavement condition and mobility measures. States are least likely to be prepared to process and produce measures for the mobility performance areas when compared to the other areas. Results showed that in general, most states have the data they need and are prepared to process it to support performance reporting.
