Abstract:

Each year, Transportation Research Board staff members visit state departments of transportation, university transportation centers, transit and other modal agencies, and private industry to exchange information on initiatives and research that are planned and under way. This report presents an overview of how states are preparing for the fast pace of technological change, strengthening the resilience of transportation systems, ensuring equitable and accessible mobility, and utilizing resources efficiently. Topics discussed include: Performance-based planning, planning for automation, and resiliency planning; Big data and data analytics; Unmanned aircraft systems; Freight technology solutions; Ports and regional supply chains; Positive train control implementation, state-supported passenger rail, and high-speed rail planning; Transportation network companies and automated public transit vehicles; Environmental impacts analysis; Roadside safety design countermeasures, use of fiber-reinforced polymers in infrastructure projects; E-construction and alternative project delivery methods; Advances in geotechnical engineering; and Highway operations and connected/automated vehicles.
