Title: Urban Transit Mode Selection in the United States
Accession Number: 01663007
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This research supports more informed transit mode selection processes. In this paper, the authors provide an overview of the results of the Transit Mode Selection Survey developed and distributed in 2015. This information was gathered as part of a larger research effort aimed at informing and guiding transit mode selection processes in the United States and beyond. A national survey of transit agencies and metropolitan planning organizations (MPOs) was used to gather insights on transit planning and mode selection processes in the United States and Puerto Rico. To develop useful tools for transit agencies and planning organizations to use in their mode selection processes, it is important to first gain a thorough understanding of the nature of these processes and the priorities driving transit mode selection. The Transit Mode Selection Survey was developed specifically for this purpose. Research results demonstrate that a lack of familiarity with many innovative transit technologies is limiting their consideration and use. Further, this paper documents a heavy emphasis on costs and other economic factors in transit planning processes, which may be overshadowing other important considerations in urban transit mode selection processes.
