Accession Number: 01658130
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is document the progress and challenges associated with the development of spaceport facilities to support the growth of commercial space transportation in the United States. This paper provides a brief history, including milestone events and supporting legislation, and a context for this history through comparison with the development and regulation of airports in the United States. The inventory of existing spaceport facilities is presented, and opportunities and challenges that may affect the future development, maintenance and operation of spaceports in the United States are discussed. Although there are government reports that address specific components of spaceport development and operation, there is very little literature that pulls together the many factors that affect the evolution and operation of spaceport facilities.
Supplemental Notes: This paper was sponsored by TRB committee AV010 Standing Committee on Intergovernmental Relations in Aviation. U.S. Spaceport Infrastructure: History in the Making: This is an alternate title.
