Abstract:

The primary objective of this research is to explore factors influencing bicyclists’ degree of satisfaction. A field survey of cycling was conducted in Shanghai, China. Bicyclists’ degree of satisfaction and information of bicyclist-related, infrastructure-related and traffic-related were collected. Considering the obvious differences between suburban area and urban area in Shanghai, the authors surveyed two typical areas. To decrease the errors caused by the individual differences, a random-effects ordered logistic model was used to analyze the data of suburban area and urban area separately. In the model of suburban area, the contributing factors included gender, physical separation between motorized vehicles and bicycles, vehicle flow rate, on-street parking type, land use and bicycle flow rate. In the model of urban area, besides the factors in the model of suburban area, width of bicycle lane, width of sidewalk, separation between pedestrians and bicycles and pedestrian flow rate were also significant. According to the results of quantitative impact of every factor, some specific suggestions on planning, design and operation for bicycle facilities were offered. In both areas, when the vehicle flow rate is high, physical separation between motorized vehicles and bicycles can’t be removed. And any form of on-street parking should be prohibited. To make the cycling environment clean and order, management on stores near the bicycle facilities should be paid more attention especially in suburban area. It is significant to guarantee riding space, bicycle parking space and walking space especially in urban area. Considering bicycle traffic and pedestrian traffic together is very essential in urban area.
