Abstract:

A sound understanding of travel behaviour can help improve the efficiency of public transport systems and increase their market share. Nowadays studies of the characteristics of public transport users can rely on the large dataset collected by ITS implemented for management reasons. Using one of these datasets, the authors typify the regular users of London Santander Cycles Scheme on the basis of variables describing the spatial and time distribution of their hires. Among others, the authors detect the existence of a small group of scheme enthusiasts, who account for more than one third of the hires from regular users. The features of the largest cluster show that the interest in the scheme increases when cycling occurs in beautiful urban landscapes, but this is not sufficient to promote a regular use. Finally, the authors suggest that a large number of users are pure commuters.
