Title: Performance Evaluation of Dedicated Bus Lanes on Major Urban Roads Based on GPS Data: Case Study of Shenzhen, China
Accession Number: 01626063
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Dedicated Bus lanes (DBLs) are widely used in China as a method of bus priority guarantee, but its effect on improving bus operation speed is controversial. Using Global Positioning System (GPS) data and bus stop data of buses and cabs driven on 54 roads in Shenzhen City, this study first obtains vehicle speed, bus stop density, and other information; then analyzes the performance of DBLs on major urban roads in Shenzhen City; and verifies via statistical analysis whether using DBLs play a significant role in improving bus operation performance. Data is processed based on ArcGIS Engine. The total length of the research road analyzed in this study reached 208.4 km. The results show that bus speeds on a road segment significantly depend on the average speed of other vehicles, and the bus stop density of a road segment has a significant influence on bus speeds on that `road section. However, the use of DBL brings an insignificant effect on bus speed improvement, and the bus stop form and location factor also have an insignificant effect on bus speeds on a road section. In future work, a quantitative interpretation model will be established to explain the results found out in this study.
