Abstract:

Sport and leisure activities are behind significant bicycle traffic volumes on Spanish two-lane rural roads. The difference between motor vehicle and bicycle speeds may be among the causes of the high severity of cyclist accidents, which caused 54 deaths in Spain in 2014 only in rural environments. There was no previous research on the relationship between the infrastructure (horizontal and vertical alignment) and the speed of sport cyclists. This study instrumented 10 racing bicycles with high definition (HD) mini-cameras equipped with global positioning system (GPS). Cameras where attached to seat-posts, focusing the rear part of the bicycle. Position and speed were recorded at a 1 Hz frequency. The cyclists belong to a cycling club of Valencia (Spain). They performed two stages on two different weekends. Authors did not make any specific modification to cyclists’performance, apart from the installation of cameras. Therefore, naturalistic data of around 60 hours was obtained. Results of this research were mainly speed profiles (instant speed along road segments) for a sample of 10 bicycles. Plots for comparing speed distribution with horizontal alignment (curves) and vertical alignment (gradient) were obtained as well.Models to predict the speed mean and its distribution were proposed. The higher speed and its higher deviation were found on downhills, where the influence of horizontal alignment was quite significant. Curves with low radius and high deflection angle concentrated speed reductions and opposing lane invasions. On level terrain or uphill segments, the presence of curves did not affect much the speed, being gradient the main factor.
