Abstract: A mechanistic performance prediction method is under development in Sweden. In order to evaluate and calibrate the method, it is important to compare the calculated results with actual measurements in a full-scale testing of pavement structures. This type of comparison is validated if the models applied capture the correct structural behaviour. Accelerated pavement tests (APTs) using a heavy vehicle simulator (HVS) were performed on an instrumented flexible test road structure at the Swedish National Road and Transport Research Institute (VTI) test facility. At regular intervals condition surveys and pavement response measurements were performed, thus providing reliable direct measurements of stresses and strains in a flexible pavement structure as well as the development of the rutting profile of the structure. A 2D axisymmetric multi-layer elastic theory (MLET) was thereafter used to model the obtained response, taking into account the stress-dependent behaviour of the unbound base and subbase layers. The bitumen bound layers and the subgrade were treated as linear elastic materials. The calculated results were compared with the measured values and the agreement was generally good. The accumulation of permanent deformation and the rutting profile were further modelled using a stress-dependent simple work hardening material model. A “time-hardening” procedure was used to take into account the effects of various stress cases due to lateral wandering and increased wheel loads. Good agreement between measurements and calculations was achieved for all layers.
