In urban areas in emerging economies, motorization fueled by rapid economic growth is causing severe traffic congestion. While some cities are taking various measures such as rail-based transit, it often takes time to develop a dense transit network. On the other hand, some conventional paratransit services in these countries, which usually utilize a vehicle with 8 – 15 passenger capacity, are losing market share. In the developed countries, a new transit service sometimes called a “Microtransit Service,” with flexible routes and on-demand scheduling function, is emerging in some metropolitan areas. Taking these backgrounds into consideration, the purpose of this paper is 1) to grasp potential demand for microtransit services; 2) to estimate the impact of microtransit services; and 3) to examine the merits of microtransit services from an operational perspective in urban areas of developing countries. By utilizing a household survey in the Jakarta Metropolitan Area (JMA), it is revealed that there is a significant amount of potential demand in urban areas in developing countries. In addition, potential impact on the reduction of vehicle traffic is observed. The impact is evident in cases where the vehicle size is for 8 – 20 passengers. Based on this demand analysis, the operational merits of the assumed microtransit service in a route in the city of Bogor, which is located in the JMA, are also analyzed. Even with the introduction of new vehicles and increased salary for drivers, the microtransit service can be financially viable due to improvement of operational efficiency
