Title: Identifying the Determinants of Access Mode Choice for SunRail Riders
Accession Number: 01623267
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This research investigates the relationship between selected SunRail station area characteristics and the modes that riders use to access the train station. Its objective is to determine the station area characteristics that are most strongly associated with use of active or bus transit access modes by station users, as reported in on-board surveys. Relationships between station area characteristics and mode split are quantified using descriptive statistics and bivariate correlations. Station area characteristics found to be significantly related to access mode split include population density, station parking inventory, and WalkScore. Population density was negatively associated with park-and ride. Parking inventory was positively associated with park-and-ride and negatively associated with bicycling and walking. WalkScore, an indicator of walkability, was positively associated with walking and negatively associated with park-and-ride. These findings are used as a framework to discuss potential planning and policy recommendations for SunRail and the municipalities where its stations are located to consider in an effort to increase active and transit access mode use for SunRail riders. Recommendations include prioritizing residential uses within transit-oriented development, minimizing station parking inventory, and implementing micro-level pedestrian improvements.
