Title: Field Validation of Laboratory Tests to Assess Cracking Resistance of Asphalt Mixtures: An Experimental Design

Record URL: Availability: Find a library where document is available Abstract: The objective of this research was to develop an experimental design for field validation of laboratory tests selected under this study to assess the cracking potential of asphalt mixtures. A three-step process was taken to achieve the objective: (1) identify and select cracking tests, (2) define a plan to refine these selected cracking tests through ruggedness testing and an ILS, and (3) develop an experimental design for validation of the selected cracking tests. This digest first summarizes the cracking test selection process and identified the cracking tests selected for field validation. The necessary steps for refining each cracking test method through ruggedness testing and ILS are then presented. Finally, a D-optimal experimental design approach is employed to develop field experimental designs and estimated costs and schedules to complete the experiment for each of four cracking types: thermal, reflection, bottom-up fatigue, and top-down. A summary of the budgets and timelines for the validation studies for the cracking tests are given.
