Title: The Relationship Between Surrogate Safety and Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram
Accession Number: 01595108
Record Type: Component
Abstract: The urban Macroscopic Fundamental Diagram (MFD) is generally used for evaluating and controlling different traffic characteristics in an urban network. The MFD finds its extensive application in the development of algorithms that can improve traffic conditions. Similar to congestion, safety is an important externality of traffic. However, there is a limited set of knowledge when it comes to understanding the relationship between MFD and safety. Previous studies show that traffic flow and speed significantly influence the traffic safety. The theory and relationship between safety and MFD will provide insight into analysing the correlation between crashes and traffic flow and develop dynamic control measures to improve safety. This is achieved via the assessment of influence areas making use of conflict analysis technique. The results obtained from this analysis are initially identified via the observation of the simulated traffic patterns and later from another test using Surrogate Safety Assessment Model (SSAM) conflict analysis software. The results show some of well defined relationships. This model will enable policy makers and traffic planners in understanding the real-time correlation between traffic characteristics and safety from a macroscopic viewpoint.
