Title: Tips for Sharing the Road with Commercial Motor Vehicles: A Web-Based Approach
Accession Number: 01589896
Record Type: Component
Abstract: When examining the critical issue of light-vehicle and heavy-vehicle interactions, a point of major concern is the findings showing a larger proportion of light-vehicle drivers are at-fault during these incidents. This may be indicative of inadequacies in driver education training programs related to the topic of heavy vehicles and how to share the road safely. Thus; the purpose of this project was threefold: (1) To educate light vehicle drivers about the importance of proper road sharing behavior; (2) To raise awareness about the key areas of concern when sharing the road with trucks; (3) To teach light vehicle drivers some handy tips and rules of thumb to help them practice proper road sharing behavior. The Tips for Sharing the Road with Commercial Motor Vehicles website was designed to cover five key sharing-the-road scenarios using video clips of real-world driving events captured during one of Virginia Tech Transportation Institute’s naturalistic driving studies. The website combines naturalistic driving video clips, simulator screenshots, scenario descriptions, short tips and facts, as well as photographs of actual crashes between light and heavy vehicles to convey the importance of proper road sharing behavior. Ideally, this publicly accessible website will be used as a supplemental driving tips training program.
