Title:

Performance Assessment of Cost-effective Ultra-high Performance Concrete

Accession Number:

Abstract:

The use of ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) is growing with diversified applications in highway infrastructure construction and repair. This paper presents the results of a comprehensive study undertaken to optimize cost-effective UHPC. High volume of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), local natural sand (0-4.75mm), and masonry sand (0-2 mm) were used to develop the concrete mixtures. The optimized mixtures were evaluated in terms of fresh, rheological, and mechanical properties, cost per unit strength, shrinkage characteristics, and durability. The results indicated that cost-effective UHPC produced with high volume of SCMs, a relatively low binder amount, and conventional concrete sand could achieve comparable or slightly better performance than that of the reference mixture.
