Abstract:

The use of ground polyethylene terephthalate (PET) particles in asphalt may provide an environmentally friendly solution for the disposal of large quantities of PET waste. This study evaluated the performance of PET modified hot mix asphalt (HMA) in both dry and wet process, and unmodified HMA as control. Both wet and dry process mixtures contained 10% PET by weight of the base asphalt. The mixture performance tests included rutting test by Asphalt Pavement Analyzer (APA) and retrofitted APA Hamburg test, moisture susceptibility by Indirect Tensile Strength (ITS), and dynamic modulus, E*, by Asphalt Mixture Performance Tester (AMPT). The main results showed: 1) The wet process mixture exhibited better rutting resistance and a higher tensile strength ratio (TSR) than the control; 2) The dry process mixture exhibited better resistance to permanent moisture damage in APA Hamburg testing and also exhibited a higher TSR than the control; 3) The modified mixtures exhibited lower E* and higher phase angles than the control.
