Accession Number: 01593341
Record Type: Component
Abstract: This paper presents a new model for engaging public participation, particularly younger generations, in public policy and planning decisions aimed at sustainable developments in Egypt. College students, researchers, and young professionals from a variety of disciplines were asked to submit their ideas for sustainable developments as part of a design competition titled “Sustainable Exit from the Valley”. The competition attracted more than 120 competitors and 53 different submissions. After initial evaluation 42 submissions were chosen for the final competition. Awards were given to the top 10 submissions. A panel of experts was used to evaluate and rank these proposed developments according to their sustainable economic potential. A national transportation network that supports the proposed sustainable development alternatives was then developed integrating existing national transportation networks. The paper provides an evaluation of the public participation model used in this planning effort and its acceptance by different stakeholders involved in the process. It also identifies several barriers that limit the effectiveness of youth involvement campaigns in developing countries such as Egypt.
Supplemental Notes: This paper was sponsored by TRB committee ABE90 Standing Committee on Transportation in the Developing Countries.
