Title: Modeling the Severity of Three-Wheeler Crashes Using the Data from Sri Lanka
Accession Number: 01589933
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Three-wheelers are widely being used in Asian countries including Sri Lanka for public transport and for carrying freight. However, little research has been conducted to study the impact of three-wheelers on road safety. The objective of this study is to recognize the predominant factors of three-wheeler crashes and evaluate factors contributing to the typically elevated severity of three-wheeler crashes. Data were obtained from Police crash records which contains details of police reported crashes, at all severity levels that occurred in Sri Lanka during years 2009-2013. Odds Ratios of different driver, vehicle, environment, and road-related factors and contributory causes were investigated developing a binary logistic model. The predominant factors for three-wheeler crashes were driving in daylight conditions, driving on rural roads, driving under clear weather conditions, driving during weekdays. It was also shown that older vehicles, driven by middle aged drivers, and driven by males were predominant factors. According to developed model; factors such as two vehicle crashes, crashes in urban areas, crashes under clear weather conditions, intersection related crashes, young driver-involved crashes, middle aged driver-involved crashes, and crashes due to road conditions, indicated to be a greater cause for severe crashes. On the other hand, certain variables were found to present lower odds of severity of three-wheeler-crashes. These findings can potentially aid researchers in understanding the various characteristics and causes contributing to the occurrences and increasing severity of three-wheeler crashes.
