Title: Characteristics of Fatal Crashes Involving Trucks on National Highways in India
Accession Number: 01589924
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Amongst vehicle categories, trucks, tempos, tractors and other articulated vehicles report 21% of road crashes 489,400 in India in 2014. These crashes (489,400) lead to death of 139,671 persons. Further, major share of fatal crashes (34% of total) are observed to be on National Highways in 2014. This study has considered historic fatal cash data from 2010-2013 for the selected three NHs having varying lanes. Trucks are involved in 42% of total fatal crashes on three NHs. The study results revealed that share of head-on collision in fatal crashes is observed to be highest, i.e., 43% on two-lane NH-8. The share of truck occupants in fatal crashes is observed to be varying between 4-41%, however, trucks are involved in 48-73% as impacting vehicles in fatal crashes on three NHs. Truck occupants are observed to be victims in 41% fatal crashes on six-lane NH-1, and followed by 13% on two-lane NH-8 and highest proportion (52%) of motorcyclists have been hit by trucks on four-lane NH-24. The probability of single truck involving in fatal crash is found to be more than two times as compared to two or more vehicles on NHs; and, likelihood of fatal truck-involved crash is observed to be lower on divided “four-lane” than undivided “two-lane”. Based on the study findings, appropriate safety measures/regulations or polices may be taken up by the respective organizations to curb occurrence of fatal truck-involved crashes.
