Title: Classification of Water-Reactive Materials That Emit Toxic Gases
Accession Number: 01594564
Record Type: Component
Abstract: Water-reactive materials that emit toxic gases are those materials that have an ability to generate substantial quantities of toxic gas(es) fairly rapidly after a spill into water. There were some major incidents that resulted in significant emissions of toxic gases when the water-reactive materials were spilled into a water body. Several injuries were reported as well as environmental impacts resulting from sudden releases of toxic gases during transportation of the water-reactive materials. To assess the significance of toxic emissions and the way to classify these water-reactive materials, experiments conducted to collect data on the extent of toxic gas emissions at the ambient temperature were evaluated to suggest a way these materials could be classified in the absence of classification criteria as it relates to transportation of dangerous goods. The experimental data are presented and analyzed in a manner analogous to the existing hazard groupings used in hazard classification of toxic liquids from which toxic gases are volatilized.
