Abstract:

The Transportation Research Board’s Transit IDEA program, which funds high-risk, high-payoff inventions that may not be candidates for usual government research programs, awarded a grant to Lee Huston for the development of an invention to clean viruses, bacteria, and mold from the air in transit buses by harnessing an ultraviolet germicidal irradiation (UVGI) device to the vehicle’s air conditioning system. This article describes how the UVGI device (Breath Safe) works and benefits of its use. A list of transit companies utilizing the device is also provided.
