Abstract:

This article examines the response measures utilized in the Ebola outbreak, such as, trade bans, entry restrictions, and flight cancellations and modifications. It looks at the effectiveness of these measures at halting the spread of Ebola and the resulting unintended consequences. New strategies to more effectively address emerging infectious disease threats are suggested. The main lesson is to shift from a strategy of containment or reaction to a principally proactive or mitigating approach. The transportation industry can play a pivotal role in mitigating the threat of infectious diseases.
