Abstract:

On-road bikeway maintenance practices are mostly corrective and lack emphasis on preventive maintenance. Preventive maintenance is essential to preserve on-road bikeways in a good condition. This paper explains a framework to integrate on-road bikeways maintenance into pavement management practices. The unique aspects related to on-road bikeways are covered by this framework including: inventory data; distress types; severity and quantity; maintenance trigger values; inspection intervals; maintenance treatments; decision trees; budgets with funds dedicated to preventive maintenance for on- road bikeways; prioritization; reporting for condition; and delayed maintenance. The increasing number of on-road bikeways in U.S. cities can be managed by integrating this framework into existing pavement management systems, providing a holistic multimodal view on the transportation network that leads to more efficient funding allocation results. The implementation of this framework will be beneficial to local agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, and cities who want to include on-road bikeways in their existing pavement management practices.
