This study presents an experimental investigation of using fine recycled concrete aggregates (RCA) from construction demolition waste as a replacement of fine virgin limestone aggregates in hot mix asphalt. The work scope consists of conducting fundamental material property tests for RCA and the natural aggregates used, determining the optimum aggregate gradation for a 12.5mm hot mix asphalt (HMA) mix, and conducting mix designs for a control mix consisting of natural limestone aggregates only and mixes with 10%, 15%, 20%, 30%, and 45% of fine aggregates replaced with fine RCA. The volumetric properties of all mixes are evaluated based on Marshall and Superpave mix design criteria; whereas, mechanical properties are evaluated through the complex modulus test at a range of temperatures and frequencies. Additionally, rheological testing is conducted on the mastic phase of the mixes to correlate mastic to mixture performance for mixes with and without RCA filler. Analysis of testing results indicates a general improvement in rutting and cracking resistance for mixes containing up to 20% and 30% fine RCA replacement.
