Abstract:

Work zones on freeways have a significant influence on traffic flow and the amount of congestion. For an effective work zone management, planning tools for assessing the impact of work zones on traffic flow quality are required. The paper introduces a model to estimate travel time losses caused by work zones on freeways. For standardized traffic demand series, the travel time losses due to congestion arising during one year are estimated by using a deterministic queuing model for different work zone layouts. Based on these results, model functions that can be used to determine the travel time losses depending on the work zone layout and the demand characteristics were developed. Thus, preliminary estimates of travel time losses can be conducted for all prevalent work zone layouts on two- or three-lane carriageways. These estimates can offer valuable decision guidance for work zone management.
