Abstract:

A wireless sensor network adopting the ultrasonic detectors and a lateral scanning method is developed to measure the traffic volume on the multiple lanes of a roadway. Unlike the existing ultrasonic sensor systems, the proposed system can be easily installed and maintained in various roadway/traffic environments. Further, the system can be configured in different ways depending on the number of lanes to be covered. The field experimentation in a real roadway showed promising results with low detection error.
