Abstract:

As a cost-effective, rapid, safe and clean transit mode, the modern streetcar enjoys growing popularity around the world. The main purpose of this paper is to explain performance of Chinese streetcar systems in terms of the different attributes to identify what type of characteristics that should be promoted to achieve socially desirable performance characteristics, and to provide references to the development of streetcar systems in China and foreign countries. For this purpose, abundant data of four streetcar lines have been investigated from three cities in Mainland China. Based on the comparisons and analyses of the data, the state of streetcar systems and the performance of each streetcar lines are presented. The paper also describes three representative streetcar systems and their impacts on the surrounding environment based on the case studies of three cities in Mainland China. Recommendations concerning planning, system design, and operation management are proposed in the paper.
