Abstract:

This paper presents a novel method which filters and extracts the non-recurrent traffic features from the recurrent traffic congestion. A number of existing incident algorithms assume the motorway is in free-flow and hence the incidents are identified by detecting surges in density measurements. Nevertheless, this free-flow assumption is not generally applicable in particular when considering congested sections. The algorithm is tested on the busy London’s orbital motorway M25 with loop detector measurements and historic incident logs. This study contributes to the development of advanced incident detection and management techniques.
