Accession Number: 01556566
Record Type: Component
Availability: Transportation Research Board Business Office 500 Fifth Street, NW Abstract: This paper is an attempt to lay out a set of definitions and considerations that can be used in a systematic approach to develop a planning research program for a revolutionary technology which has few precedents, automated roadway vehicles. It traces the history of the transportation planning process as a framework for developing tools to model and plan for the eventual introduction of large numbers of automated vehicles into the automotive market. Definitions are provided for various levels of vehicle automation and potential travel demand implications are described. The paper also discusses the potential for early introduction of automated vehicles in low speed environments and the need for mapping to facilitate their use more broadly on the roadway network. It concludes with a discussion of the need for research to better understand the transportation and environmental impacts of automated vehicles.
Supplemental Notes: This paper was sponsored by TRB committee ADB40 Transportation Demand Forecasting.
