However, current trends in Bangalore are accelerating towards private vehicle ownership with ever longer commutes. This paper addresses the need for, and some benefits of, possible adaptations to the current built form. In particular, the authors go into detail regarding gated communities (GC) and their impact on Bangalore as a whole. Through a review of the literature, they identified indicators most commonly referred to as impacting transportation through urban design. The authors then used these indicators to design an audit that evaluates possible changes to be made to the built form. A survey of residents in GCs was administrated for travel patterns and preferences, and matched to possible built form changes. This allowed the authors to estimate fuel savings for their communities. They found that for only six of the approximately 2,000 GCs in Bangalore, the potential impact reaches about 30,000 households, resulting in an annual savings of 2.5 million liters of fuel, and reducing emissions by 3.8 million kg of CO2. These amount from relatively minor changes: protected sidewalks within 1.5 km of the developments, bike lanes out to 5 km from the development, and an internal shuttle feeding to the public transit that already exists in Bangalore.
