Abstract:
This issue contains 18 papers concerned with freeway operations, regional systems management and operations, or managed lanes. Specific topics addressed in this issue include: planning and assessment of traffic incident management programs; ramp metering; an online scalable approach for identifying secondary crashes; freeway travel time forecasting; real-time queue-end detection on freeways; mainstream traffic flow control at sags; an emergency response system to minimize incident impacts; congestion-related travel time losses on freeways; and an integrated approach combining ramp metering and variable speed limits to improve motorway performance. Other topics included in this issue are: instantaneous versus experienced travel times; congestion factors for active transportation and demand management; integrated corridor management; optimal control of motorways; an agent-based approach to toll pricing with dynamic feedback control; vehicle occupancy data; predicting managed lane use; value of travel time savings; and a high occupancy toll lane’s impact on commuter bus and vanpool occupancy.
