Abstract:

This Transportation Research Circular includes seven full technical papers and three extended abstracts focusing on innovative applications of the Highway Capacity Manual 2010 (HCM 2010). HCM 2010 involves many significant updates and additions to previous editions of the HCM. The papers in this Circular provide case studies, performance measures, data collection approaches, model enhancement, and other aspects of HCM methodologies. Specific topics addressed in the paper include critical headways for drivers turning right on red, speed-flow relationships, the HCM freeway analysis procedure, auxiliary lanes at freeway weaving segments, HCM-compatible performance measures, traffic performance measures for two-lane highways, and highway capacity planning. The extended abstracts address the influence of undesignated pedestrian crossings on midblock capacity, capacity estimation for weaving segments, and lane utilization at two-lane arterial approaches. All of these papers were submitted to the Highway Capacity and Quality of Service Committee in response to a special call for papers for the 93rd Annual Meeting of the Transportation Research Board in January 2014. The peer review and selection followed the same TRB paper review guidelines and selection criteria as all other papers submitted for the TRB Annual Meeting. These papers were presented in a special session at the Annual Meeting.
