A recently completed National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) project developed guidance for officials at state departments of transportation and other agencies to develop and implement strategies for communicating the role and importance of maintenance and asset preservation in sustaining highway system performance. This article discusses the findings from this project, which were summarized in NCHRP Report 742, Communicating the Value of Preservation: A Playbook. Three basic steps were suggested in the report: identify the audiences; design the messages; and deliver the message via multiple channels.
